Baseball’s Cathedral in the Bronx

March 28th, 2008

Growing up in New York City can spoil you as a baseball fan. But while the Mets have had some Amazin’ moments, it’s the New York Yankees that are to the National Pastime what the Beatles are to popular music.

Monday, March 31 is more than just another Opening Day. It’s the final opening day at the old Yankee Stadium. For one day, at least, the top story won’t be steroids. Rather, the theme will be history…baseball history.

Sex and the city (even better than TV)

March 22nd, 2008

When enjoying a city famous for never sleeping, one might be excused for conjuring up some, uh, offbeat images of what goes on after hours. Sure, they may have sanitized the old Red Light District, but don’t assume NYC sex can only be found in a museum.

There’s something for every taste: from naughty to wiggy, from ouch to couch to all of the above.

Alternative lifestyles?

But, of course.

If you’d prefer to procure what you need to keep things more private:

Toys in Babeland

The Pink Pussycat

The Pleasure Chest

And remember: Safe is the new kinky.

Get on your bikes and ride…

March 20th, 2008

Just because New York had yet another relatively mild winter doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stretch our legs and celebrate the arrival of spring. In fact, this seems like the ideal time to navigate the island of Manhattan…on two wheels instead of four.

Fun City has a well-earned reputation for traffic, congestion, and a dearth of parking spots but obscured by all those honking horns, screeching tires, and kamikaze cabbies, New York just so happens to be a Bicycle Mecca. We have bikes to rent and bikes to race. Activist bikes, recycled bikes, and radical bikes. No matter what style of ride you choose, there’s a bike path for you (but don’t forget your helmet).

Zen and the Art of Meatless Maintenance

March 18th, 2008

March 20 is the annual Great American Meatout, a golden opportunity to try one of New York’s many meatless venues, for example: Zen Burger. For those craving shrimp or burgers or chicken, beef, and hot dogs, Zen Burger is fast food with a twist: all the taste without the cruelty or cholesterol. Toss in a soy milkshake and a side of fries for the full NYC diner experience…just blocks from Grand Central Station.

Anyone seeking other Big Apple venues for their own personal Meatout Moment can connect with the good folks at Viva Vegie for some goodly gastronomical guidance.

P.S. It’s never too early to start planning for New York’s first ever Veggie Pride Day on May 18. Soy to the world…

March 17: A Lucky Day to be in NYC

March 14th, 2008

On St. Patrick’s Day in New York, you probably don’t want to miss the world famous parade: 247 years strong and counting. On their green-lined route, the marchers will pass St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the American Irish Historical Society. Afterwards - Irish or not - you may wish to indulge in Emerald Isle arts or perhaps imbibe a wee bit of ale (unless green tea is your preference).

Those in search of even more green can seek out a lawn (among other leafy friends) or a market, but if you prefer thinking over drinking…perhaps Brooklyn has the right shade of emerald for you.
