For those about to rock (climb)

May 8th, 2008

New York’s urban landscape may not, at first, seem alluring to those who find peace while scaling rocks. However, the climbing community continues to grow and there’s no shortage of indoor walls. Anyone craving some outdoor action without leaving the confines of Manhattan Island are directed to Rat Rock (so named for the boulder’s four-legged nocturnal visitors). Located just west of Heckscher Playground, Rat Rock is roughly 150 feet wide and 25 feet tall. It draws thousands of rock climbers – and fascinated on-lookers – every year. Bring your climbing shoes (or just your digital camera) for a unique and free outdoor afternoon in the park known as Central.

Keep in mind, The Gunks are only a bus ride away.
