Magna Carta at The Morgan

April 21st, 2010

magna-carta

The disruptions in European airspace have produced a serendipitous fall-out for New Yorkers — one of four
original versions of Magna Carta held by the Bodleian Library is now on view at The Morgan.

The manuscript had never before left Britain since being issued almost eight hundred years ago. Magna Carta or “Great Charter of English Liberties” was signed by King John at Runnymede on June 15, 1215 and was reissued throughout the thirteenth century by England’s rulers. It is considered one of the most important legal documents in the history of democracy and includes such fundamental rights as habeas corpus.

The Morgan Library & Museum is located at 225 Madison Avenue at 36th Street, New York, NY 10016

bresson

The Museum of Modern Art, Brown Bag Lunch Lectures, today considers the exhibition “Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century”

Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004) is one of the most original, accomplished, influential, and beloved figures in the history of photography. For more than twenty-five years, he was the keenest observer of the global theater of human affairs—and one of the great portraitists of the twentieth century. This lecture provides an overview of MoMA’s exhibition Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century, the first retrospective of Cartier-Bresson in the United States in three decades.

Dan Leers (MA, Columbia University) is the Beaumont and Nancy Newhall Curatorial Fellow in the Department of Photography at MoMA.
