New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players return to City Center with an exciting season of G&S favorites, including the three most popular titles — Pirates of Penzance, Mikado and H.M.S. Pinafore — and a new production of the satirical Ruddigore with its Harry Potteresque ancestral ghosts, beautiful music, colorful fun, and witty word play for the whole family.
Shows run alternately as matinees and evening performances through Sunday, January 17.

New York City Center presents the third annual season of Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company, celebrating the centenary of the Ballets Russes. Highlights include two U.S. premieres – a new ballet by Artistic Director Christopher Wheeldon, co-commissioned by New York City Center and Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London, and a new work by Australian choreographer Tim Harbour, commissioned by Morphoses, as well as repertoire by Lightfoot León, Alexei Ratmansky and Mr. Wheeldon. The engagement will feature live music performed by the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, with opening night conducted by the orchestra’s founder and music director, Alondra de la Parra.

Opening today at The Morgan, is a wonderful exhibition that explores the art and innovations of 20th Century stage design. The show includes drawings, watercolors, musical scores and material ranging from the Russian Avant-Garde to the American Theater of the 1960s.

The celebrated thoroughfare of Broadway has seen its share of firsts. Between Vesey and Murray Streets in the mid-1700s, Broadway featured New York’s first brick sidewalk. In 1793, it saw the first numbered houses. The first gas lighting debuted on Broadway in 1825 followed by the city’s first electric arc lights in 1882.
For an idea of what the storied street was like in the 1880s, it was claimed that you could “stand on the corner of Broadway and Houston Street and fire a shotgun in any direction without hitting an honest man.â€
Today, you probably couldn’t do it without hitting a fashion model…or a tourist aiming a digital camera at the fashion model.
