In 1975, O.A. “Bum” Phillips became head coach of the Houston Oilers, one of the worst teams in the NFL at that time. Phillips quickly converted the Oilers into a winning franchise resulting in a “Shangri-La” era in the city of Houston and a citywide phenomenon of devoted fans dubbed “Luv Ya Blue”. This humble hero’s triumphs came with sacrifices, as his obsessions affected his relationship with his family. A devastating termination from the Oilers in 1980 propelled him toward a spiritual quest that he later said he had avoided his entire life. Sunday mornings, previously a time for football and the military (Phillips had enlisted after the events of Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7, 1941) became a time for church. As such, Bum Phillips uses the question, “What to do on a Sunday?” as a unifying principle in which to examine themes relevant to contemporary audiences, such as ethics, family, faith, and happiness.

Monk Parrots, a New York-based nonprofit performing arts organization is fundraising to produce a world premiere operatic work inspired by the life of retired National Football League coach, O.A. “Bum” Phillips.

Please visit USA Projects and support the effort.

Gertrude Stein, her brothers Leo and Michael, and Michael’s wife Sarah were important patrons of modern art in Paris during the first decades of the twentieth century. This exhibition unites some two hundred works of art to demonstrate the significant impact the Steins’ patronage had on the artists of their day and the way in which the family disseminated a new standard of taste for modern art. The Steins’ Saturday evening salons introduced a generation of visitors to recent developments in art, particularly the work of their close friends Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, long before it was on view in museums.

On view through June 3, 2012.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located at 1000 Fifth Avenue, at 82nd Street.

If your greatest challenge to staying in shape, or getting in shape, is a lack of time — you will love Pete Cerqua’s fitness program – 90-Second Fitness. After analyzing gym go-ers, Cerqua found that the average person in the gym spent less than 4 minutes actually working. Between waiting for equipment, adjusting equipment, and the arc of weight lifting that doesn’t tax muscles — gym goers waste an inordinate amount of time at the gym.

Cerqua’s method engages a targeted muscle group for an entire 90 seconds. Your muscles are literally spent in a 15 minutes session. You will walk taller, feel stronger, and look visibly more toned in weeks. And to prove his method to readers of My Urban Sherpa — Cerqua is offering one complimentary month of training to our readers. Pay for one month of training, and the 2nd month of training is on the house. *Buyers beware — there will be a 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th month of training,…

This oral biography shares the wisdom, tenacity and flexibility we all need to overcome the vicissitudes in life. Billie Jean King made her entree on the tennis court, but she may well be remembered for helping to level the playing field for women in the workplace, and her interest in social justice. Her story is an inspiration.
